Small children
What a three-year-old needs from a day out is space, animals and lunch. All three are half an hour outside Rome.
40 things to book23 placesthe nearest is in Rome itself
Rome with a toddler is a series of negotiations about a pushchair on cobbles. The countryside is the opposite: nobody minds noise, there is grass, and the food comes when it comes but it comes.
The best days at this age are farms. There are animals at eye level, a job to do with hands, and a table under a tree at the end of it. After that, the lake shores — shallow, shaded, with a pedalo — and the short boat trips, which are the same idea afloat.
Where an operator has set a minimum age, it is on the card, and we do not put a day on this page that the operator has not said is suitable for small children.
The three grids below are ordered the way a day with a small child actually degrades. Farms first, because they hold up longest: there is always another animal, the ground is soft, and the meal is part of the visit rather than a separate negotiation. Then short and gentle things close to the city. Then water at a depth you can stand up in, which is the lake shore rather than the sea.
The lakes deserve their own note. The crater lakes at Castel Gandolfo, Bracciano, Trevignano and Martignano have shallow shaded edges, no waves and no private motorboats on the biggest of them, which is a materially different proposition from a July beach with surf and no shade. There are pedalos, and a pedalo is a full hour of entertainment at three years old.
Two practical rules that decide the day. A carrier beats a pushchair everywhere outside a town, and most of this page is outside a town. And build the whole thing around one thing in the morning — arrive, do it, eat, leave — rather than around a plan with a second stop in it. The second stop is where these days go wrong.
Working farms that take small visitors: milking, feeding, cheese, honey, ponies, herbs. Most of them end in lunch, which is the point — the food is part of the visit rather than a separate problem to solve at one o'clock.
Best fit for this section first, then whatever you can book today. Closest to Rome breaks a tie. Never by who pays us.

In the hill towns, yes — cobbles and steps. On the farms and the lake shores, no. A carrier is generally the better tool for a day out here.
Pasta, bread, cheese, fruit, and nobody raising an eyebrow at any of it. Farms and agriturismi are considerably more relaxed about small children than restaurants in the centre.
Short. Pick one thing within an hour, do it in the morning, eat, go home. The cards give lengths where the operator publishes them, and the middle section above is filtered to under three hours.
A farm, first choice: animals at eye level, something to do with hands, soft ground and lunch included. After that a crater lake shore with a pedalo, or a short guided visit close to the city. All three grids above are filtered for exactly this age.
The crater lake shores are shallow, shaded and without surf, and the biggest of them has no motorboats on it at all. They are a gentler proposition than a July beach. Supervision is still yours — there are no lifeguards at most of these shores.
Short. One thing within an hour of Rome, done in the morning, followed by lunch and the drive home while they sleep. The middle grid above is filtered to under three hours for that reason.
On a farm or at an agriturismo, almost always, and nobody will mind. In hill towns and at open-air sites, less reliably. It is the sort of thing worth asking when you ring to book — the number is on every card, and these are people who mostly have children of their own about the place.
