On two wheels, around Rome

The Appian Way starts inside Rome and turns into a Roman road with nothing on it after a few kilometres.

50 things to book22 placesthe nearest is in Rome itself

That is the shortest ride and it is not the best one. Further out: the crater lakes, the Sabina hills up the Tiber, the flat reclaimed plain south of Latina, and the Maremma coast, which is the best cycling country in central Italy.

Almost all of it can be done on an e-bike, and on the volcanic hills that is not laziness — the climbs out of the craters are short and steep.

About half an hour out

Close enough that the drive is not the day.

Closest to Rome first. Never by who pays us.
