Castel Gandolfo
The Pope's summer town sits on the rim of a dead volcano, and the lake at the bottom is the quietest water this close to Rome.
16 days outthe nearest is a 37 min drive from Rome
Lake Albano fills a crater, which means the walls go up on every side and the water stays flat when the coast is rough. It is small enough to paddle across in a morning and deep enough that nobody has ever built anything on the far shore. The town above it is a twenty-minute walk of terraces looking straight down onto it.
The Barberini gardens and the papal palace opened to visitors a few years ago and are the reason most people come. The lake is the reason to stay the afternoon.
