The Lepini

Drive an hour south of Rome across the reclaimed plain and the Lepini come at you like a rampart: a wall of grey rock, with towns balanced along the edge of it looking out over everything as far as the sea.
The towns are the point. Norma sits directly above the drop, which is why the paragliders launch from it. Sermoneta has an intact Caetani castle and a medieval street plan around it. Bassiano is a knot of alleys, walls and one very serious ham. Cori has a Roman temple standing at the top of it.
Underneath, the limestone is full of holes — the karst caves and sinkholes at Collepardo and Pastena on the far side, and the abyss at Collepardo that people have been climbing into since the eighteenth century.
And at the foot of the mountain, Ninfa: a medieval town abandoned to malaria in the middle ages and planted, six hundred years later, as a garden through its own ruins. It opens on set days only, and it is worth arranging a day around.
This is a page with three altitudes and it is worth choosing which one you want. Along the top are the ridge towns — Cori with its Roman temple, Carpineto, Segni, Norma on the edge of the drop — which are walking, looking and eating. Inside the rock are the caves and sinkholes. And at the bottom is the plain: buffalo dairies, the reclaimed marsh, and Ninfa's garden at the foot of the mountain.
Getting between those three is the thing to plan. They are close together in a straight line and much further apart on the road, because the road has to go round the escarpment. An hour of driving inside the day is realistic, which makes this a direction that rewards picking two things rather than four.
The Lepini are also the least-visited hour from Rome, and that is the actual argument for coming. A ridge town on a weekday here has nobody in it, the ham at Bassiano is taken as seriously as anything in Italy, and the paragliding off Norma is one of the few places within reach of the city where the landscape does the work.
Norma, Bassiano, Sermoneta, Cori, Sezze, Carpineto, Segni: hill towns an hour from Rome that almost no visitor reaches. Roman temples, intact medieval streets, walls, and food that has stayed local because nobody came to change it. Cori has more to do in it than any of the others on this page.

Norma, mostly. The Lepini escarpment drops straight to the plain, which makes it the natural launch site within an hour and a half of the city, and there are tandem flights for people with no experience at all.
It works as a day, and it is better as a night — the ridge towns are at their best in the evening, and the drive back at midnight is the least good part of the day.
About an hour to the first of the ridge towns and an hour and a half to the far ones, with the caves on the eastern side further again. Each card carries the drive time calculated on the road network without traffic.
