Carpineto Romano On the trail

La Reggia dei Volsci civic museum, Carpineto Romano

Carpineto Romano

Palazzo Aldobrandini stands at the top of Carpineto Romano, and the museum inside it runs the town from the Volscian tribe through the medieval fief to the dukes who eventually gave Rome a pope.

How the day goes

  1. Climb through the old town to the palace at its highest point.
  2. Work through the rooms: the fief, the dukes, the mountain trades of the Lepini.
  3. Arrange it ahead and a guide takes you round, or a workshop runs alongside.
  4. Out into the square afterwards, with the Lepini ridges above the roofs.

This is a small-town museum rather than a national collection: come for Carpineto itself, and put the beech woods above the town in the same day.
