Riding around Rome divides into three landscapes. The coast — pine forest and dune, mostly on the presidential estate side of Ostia and up towards Tarquinia. The volcanic hills, where the tracks are old drove roads through chestnut woods. And the Maremma, a two-hour drive north, which is cattle country and where the Italian cowboy tradition actually comes from.
Most of these take complete beginners for a walk-only ride and experienced riders for something longer. What each stable offers is on its activity page.
A ride here is not a pony circuit. The standard outing is an hour or two at a walk with some trot in it, out of the yard and into whatever the yard backs onto. Several of the stables ride inside archaeological parks, which means an hour on a horse among aqueduct arches or Etruscan tombs with nobody else in the field.
Most of the yards around Rome are small family operations and most of them take the booking the way they always have, on the telephone. The number is on the card. Ring a day or two ahead rather than turning up: a stable has a fixed number of horses and the horses are the constraint, not the diary.
The kit list is short — long trousers and a shoe with a small heel that will not slide through a stirrup. Ask about a helmet when you ring; ask too whether they want you in the saddle at eight in the morning, because in July and August the middle of the day is too hot for the horse and the ride moves to either end of it.
Sorted by how close the stable is to Rome, so the top of the grid is what fits into a morning. Every entry is a yard with its own horses. What changes between them is the ground you ride on: sand and pine forest on the coast side, wooded crater rim in the Castelli, archaeological park on the edge of the city, and open country once you are past the Sabina.

Most of the stables on this page take the booking by telephone rather than through a website, and the number is on the card — a few also confirm online. Ringing works better than writing: the yard is outdoors and the phone is the thing they answer.
An hour is the standard led ride or lesson and is what most people book. The other common shape is a half day with a stop for lunch at the far end. Each card carries the operator's own duration, so you can see which is which before you ring.
At several of these yards, yes, and a couple of them take children young enough to be led. Where the stable sets a minimum age it is published on the activity page, because it is their rule and not ours. If you are booking for a family, say the ages when you call: it decides which horses come out.
The pine forest between Rome and Ostia runs all the way down to the sand, and the stables on that side of the city are the ones that can finish a ride on a beach. The cards say which do it. It is the closest thing to a coastal ride you can reach from the middle of Rome in under an hour.
Spring and autumn, when the ground is soft and the woods are worth being in. The coast rides well through the winter. In high summer expect to be offered early morning or the last hours of light instead of the middle of the day.
