Nepi
A tufa town with a Borgia fortress on one side and a gorge full of running water on the other.
6 days outthe nearest is a 59 min drive from Rome
Nepi sits on a spur between two streams, and the gorge below it is walkable — in the water, with a guide, for most of a morning. The rock is soft enough that the town is undercut by catacombs, one of them tall enough to stand in comfortably.
The Rocca was rebuilt for Lucrezia Borgia when she was given the town, and the museum runs guided visits that leave the building and take you into it. There is a riding centre in the fields outside, close enough to Rome for an afternoon.
Best fit for this section first, then whatever you can book today. Closest to Rome breaks a tie. Never by who pays us.
