Paddling suits this landscape unusually well. The lakes are craters — small, sheltered and ringed by walls, so there is nowhere for a big wave to come from — and the rivers run clear and cold out of limestone mountains an hour from the city.
You do not need experience for any of the guided outings. A flat-water kayak on Lake Albano or Bracciano is a couple of hours of gentle work and the hardest part is getting in without laughing. The river runs are more of a day, and the sea coves are the reward version for people who already paddle.
The classic beginner's mistake here is going at noon in July. Go early — the lakes are glass before nine and the light is better anyway.
Three different waters, three different days. A crater lake is the beginner's version and the one that works with children: flat, sheltered, warm by June, and with a shore you can see the whole time. A river is a moving day with a grade on it and a guide in front. The coast is the reward version, and the coves and sea caves down towards the Circeo are the payoff for being able to paddle to them.
Almost everything here comes with the boat, the paddle and the buoyancy aid, which is why you can do it on a whim. What it does not come with is protection from the sun: there is no shade on a lake, the water reflects, and this is the activity people most reliably get burned on. A long-sleeved rash top is worth more than sun cream.
Where an operator asks that you can swim, the card says so and it is their condition rather than our caution. On a guided lake outing it is a formality — you are in a buoyancy aid within sight of a shore — but they will still ask, and on the rivers and the coast it is a real requirement.

Bracciano for space and clean water and because private engines stay off it. Albano if you want the crater walls right above you and the shortest drive from Rome. Martignano if you want almost nobody there.
Something that dries, shoes you do not mind soaking, and sun protection — there is no shade on a lake. Boats, paddles and buoyancy aids come with the booking.
With the guides who run it, yes, and it is one of the strangest views of Rome there is. Not on your own and not in your own boat: the river has weirs and traffic, and the operators know where.
On the crater lakes — Albano, Bracciano, Martignano, Nemi and Vico — on the Tiber through the middle of the city, on the Aniene above Subiaco, and along the southern coast towards the Circeo. The three grids above are those three kinds of water.
Yes, and it is the easiest way onto the water here. Bracciano and Albano both have rental and instruction, Nemi has an evening session paired with a herb-farm tasting, and Trevignano and Anguillara have shore-side operators. Go early: the lakes are glass before nine.
Not for the guided lake outings, which are what most of this page is. A couple of hours of flat water with an instructor, and the hardest part is getting in. The river days are graded and say so on the card; the sea days assume you can already paddle.
Broadly spring to autumn on the lakes and the sea, with the rivers highest in spring on the snowmelt. Some operators run all year. Each card carries the operator's own window where they publish one.
On the sheltered crater lakes, generally yes, often from around six in a double kayak with an adult. The minimum age is the operator's and is on the card where they publish it. Pedalos and the shallow lake shores are the version for anybody smaller.
