Everybody looks at the river from the bridges. This goes the other way round: you sit on the water and the city passes overhead, Castel Sant'Angelo, the island, the broken arch of Ponte Rotto.

How the day goes

  1. Meet near Porta del Popolo, a short walk from the Flaminio metro stop.
  2. Onto the water below the embankment, where the noise of Rome drops away.
  3. Under the bridges, with rapids running at Ponte Garibaldi and Ponte Fabricio.
  4. Out below Ponte Rotto, still in the middle of the city you started in.

This is a working city river and a paddled raft with rapids in it, not a sightseeing cruise with a rail to lean on.
