Eleven gorges across the Sabina hills, not one single place.

A gorge in the Sabina hills, taken the only way a gorge can be taken: from the top, downwards, on foot and in the water. You walk in over the ridge, drop into it, and after that the route is the gorge itself.

How the day goes

  1. Drive out early — the gorges sit off the main roads in the Rieti hills, and departures are morning only.
  2. The approach is on foot: a walk in to the head of the gorge, kitted up, before anything begins.
  3. Then down through water-worn rock and pools, swimming the stretches that are deep enough to swim.
  4. Out at the bottom in the early afternoon, back at the car, and the road home from there.

It wants a whole morning of effort and the confidence to be in deep water — for a river day that asks neither, urban rafting starts in the middle of Rome.
