Santa Scolastica is the older of the two Benedictine houses above Subiaco and the one most people skip. Its cloisters run from Romanesque to Cosmatesque to Renaissance as you cross them.

How the day goes

  1. Turn up at the abbey and wait for the next turn to form; they leave often.
  2. The guide takes you through the cloisters, the church and the monastic rooms.
  3. Groups and school parties are a separate arrangement and need booking ahead.

If there is room for only one of the pair, the Sacro Speco up the road is the spectacular half; this is the quieter, older one.
