Subiaco

The Simbruini keep their beech forest dark and wet long after the rest of Lazio has dried out, and the guides here will take you into it after dark as readily as at midday, head torches on.

How the day goes

  1. You settle the route and the level with the guide first, since the walks run from gentle to long.
  2. From Subiaco the road climbs into the beech woods, and the trailhead is where the tarmac gives out.
  3. On a night walk the torch beam is all you get, and the forest sounds arrive before anything is visible.
  4. Longer trips exist too, sleeping out in a tent or a refuge instead of turning back.

There is no fixed itinerary published up front: the level is agreed with the guide, which suits someone who would rather be asked than assigned.
