Terracina On the trail

Guided visit to the temple of Jupiter Anxur above Terracina

Terracina

The temple platform hangs over the whole gulf — Terracina straight below, Circeo across the water, the islands on a clear day. The Romans threw up rows of arches purely to make the mountain flat enough to build on.

How the day goes

  1. Up Monte Sant'Angelo, by road or the steep old path out of the town.
  2. Along the cryptoporticus, the vaulted gallery holding the terrace up.
  3. Out onto the platform, then the small temple and the Roman camp behind it.
  4. Sunset is what people book this one for, and they are right.

Groups go at set times with a guide, so it is reserved rather than dropped in on, and the ridge takes the wind.
