Basalt cliffs above the sea On the water

Circeo sea caves by boat

Terracina

The Circeo promontory drops straight into the sea at the far end of the Pontine coast, and its base is full of caves. You go along it in a small boat, close enough in to see inside them.

How the day goes

  1. Board, push off, and run the foot of the promontory with the cliff on one side and open sea on the other.
  2. Cave after cave cut into the rock at water level, and the boat working its way past them.
  3. Nobody has to paddle, swim or climb anything: you sit, and the coast goes by.
  4. Back on shore with the rest of the day free, or take the sunset departure instead.

This is a boat and a view, not a swim — if you want to be in the water yourself, the Gaeta trip goes out with snorkel kit on board.

About getting back: Terracina has no working station: trains leave from Monte San Biagio–Terracina Mare, outside town. We have not yet checked the bus that gets you there, so the last useful departure from Terracina itself is unknown.
