Tivoli On the trail

The Sanctuary of Hercules Victor

Tivoli

Half of Tivoli's Roman sanctuary spent the last century under a paper mill. What is left is a terrace resting on a colossal vaulted substructure, and hardly anybody comes to see it.

How the day goes

  1. You go in underneath, among the arches holding the whole platform up.
  2. Above, the open terrace where the temple stood looks down the valley.
  3. The industrial buildings that occupied it are still readable in the fabric.

It is a shorter stop than the two famous villas, which makes it a good pairing with either rather than a day on its own.
