A tandem skydiving pair in freefall above the clouds In the air

Tandem skydive from 4,000 m, Nettuno

Nettuno

Strapped to an instructor, you go up above Nettuno on the coast south of Rome, and then the door opens and the two of you step out of it. Everything before that is paperwork and waiting, and everything after it is a parachute.

How the day goes

  1. Arrive at the airfield, sign the forms, meet the instructor you will be attached to and get the harness fitted.
  2. Then you wait on the sky: the jump goes when the wind and the cloud allow it, and not before.
  3. The climb, the door, the freefall — and then the canopy opens and it goes quiet the whole way down.
  4. Back on the field with your legs still unsure and the rest of the day in front of you.

The sky decides, and it can move you to another day — if you would rather be up there without stepping out of a plane, the balloon over the Tiber valley is the calm way to do it.
