Canale Monterano On the trail

Ancient Monterano: Bernini's ghost town in a nature reserve

Canale Monterano

Monterano emptied out and never came back. The church front and the fountain are Bernini's, and they stand alone in a valley where the ground steams sulphur and small waterfalls run through the wood.

How the day goes

  1. Walk in through the reserve: there is no road to the door and no bar at the end of it.
  2. Up to the ruined town, with the Bernini facade standing on its own against the sky.
  3. Past the sulphur vents and down to the waterfalls before turning back.

Nothing on the route sells water or shade, so you carry the day in with you and wear shoes that grip.
