Canale Monterano

Canale Monterano

A day out in Canale Monterano

Sulphur springs in the woods, and a ghost town Bernini worked on.

Old Monterano was abandoned after a raid in the seventeen-nineties and never reoccupied: the church, the aqueduct and the Bernini fountain are still standing in the nature reserve, roofless, with trees growing through them. Film crews use it; almost nobody else does.

The hot water is a few minutes away at Stigliano, where the sulphur springs have been in use since the Etruscans and now run as a thermal park. Warm all year, and better in winter.
