Monte Livata

Snow inside a morning's drive of Rome. The Simbruini hold it through the winter, and snowshoes turn a slope you would otherwise flounder in into ground you can simply walk across. Poles and a guide come with them.

How the day goes

  1. Drive up for a morning start: the outings run at weekends, and the meeting point is on the mountain.
  2. Snowshoes and poles are handed over there, and the guide walks with the group the whole way.
  3. Out over the snow at walking pace — effort rather than technique, and nothing to learn beforehand.
  4. Back at the car in the afternoon, with the road down to Rome ahead of you.

Snow decides this day and so does the car, and it needs both — when either is missing, the thermal pools at Bagni di Tivoli are the same kind of winter.
