Viterbo

Water comes out of the ground on the plain outside Viterbo hot enough to steam in winter, and it runs into open pools that nobody charges for. You walk up, you get in. That is the whole arrangement.

How the day goes

  1. Bus out of Viterbo to the Strada Terme stop, then a short walk to the water.
  2. Come already wearing what you will swim in: there is nothing here but the pools.
  3. Find the pool that suits you — it comes out scalding at the source and cools as it runs.
  4. Out before it closes for the day, with Viterbo's walled centre back up the road.

Nothing is provided here: no changing room, no shower, no bar. If that is not your idea of a spa day, Bagni di Tivoli sells tickets to pools with a park around them.

Getting there

An easy run out of Rome — make it a comfortable one

  • 1 h 31drive from the middle of Rome
  • 108 kmeach way
  • 2 honce you are there
  • Have a driver take you — nothing to do but soak

    Our pick for this one

You come out of the water warm and slow, which is a bad state to drive back in.

    • Picked up where you are staying, dropped back there
    • No parking to find and no ZTL to worry about
    • You can come out of the water and just sit
