Steam rising from natural hot pools In the hot water

Acque Albule thermal pools

Bagni di Tivoli

Sulphur water comes out of the ground here warm all year, and has done since the Romans built beside it. You spend the day moving between open-air pools with the Tiburtini hills in front of you, doing nothing in particular, which is the point.

How the day goes

  1. Arrive whenever you like — there is no start time to make and nothing to book on the day.
  2. Straight into the warm pools; the smell of sulphur goes away after about the time it takes to stop noticing it.
  3. Lunch on site or in Tivoli up the hill, then back in the water for the afternoon.
  4. Home when you feel like it: the station is behind the park and the trains run late.

It is a spa day, not a sight — if you want Tivoli's villas and gardens, do those first and come here after.
