Sulphur pools in the Sabina hills

Palombara Sabina

Sulphur water comes out of the ground here and fills open-air pools in the Sabina hills, north-east of Rome. There is nothing to book and no start time to make: you turn up, get in, and stay until they close.

How the day goes

  1. The way here is published by the operator, train and shuttle both, so you are not guessing at it.
  2. Straight into the pools; the sulphur smell stops registering sooner than you would expect.
  3. The rest is an afternoon outdoors in the hills doing very little, which is what people come for.
  4. Out at closing, into the long light of a summer evening in the Sabina.

It runs in summer only, and it is a place to sit in water rather than a thing to go and see — out of season, the Acque Albule pools outside Tivoli are open all year.
