The medieval quarter of Viterbo has another quarter underneath it: chambers and passages cut through the tufa by the Etruscans and used by everybody since, right below the paving you are standing on.

How the day goes

  1. Down from the entrance in the old town, into tunnels running on more than one level.
  2. Through the chambers with a guide, or with a recording, depending which way you book.
  3. Back up into San Pellegrino, all arches and outside staircases.
