Ariccia On the trail

Five archaeological walks in the sacred wood of Diana, booked with the local archaeology club

Ariccia

The sacred wood of Diana covered these hills before Rome did, and the local archaeology club still walks it. They run several routes, and one of them goes straight through the tunnel the Romans cut to drain Lake Nemi.

How the day goes

  1. Meet the guides in Ariccia, and choose the route: the old town, the Appian Way, or the emissary.
  2. On foot through the ancient nemus, with somebody who has read the ground for years.
  3. The Appian route ends at the Roman viaduct and the mouth of the tunnel that empties the lake.

The guides work in Italian and the routes are booked by phone, so a call comes before the walk — and the tunnel crossing is not for anyone who dislikes enclosed spaces.
