Ariccia With your hands

Beekeeper for a day inside the Castelli Romani park

Ariccia

An open hive is louder than you expect and calmer than you expect, both at the same time. This apiary sits inside the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani, and the beekeeper opens it up while you stand there.

How the day goes

  1. The hive comes apart frame by frame, read out loud by the beekeeper.
  2. How the colony divides its work, and what becomes of the nectar.
  3. Taste the local honeys the apiary makes and tell the flowers apart.

This is an apiary rather than a shop, so arrange the visit before you set off instead of turning up at the gate.
