Lago Di Vico On the trail

The Via Francigena and the old beech wood of Monte Venere

Lago di Vico

Monte Venere is the cone that sits inside the Vico crater, and the beech wood on it has stood long enough that the trees themselves are the landmarks. The pilgrim road runs along the foot of it.

How the day goes

  1. Off along the Via Francigena, on the stretch that runs above the lake.
  2. Up into the old beech wood, where the canopy closes over the path.
  3. The pozzo del diavolo, a spent crater sitting in the middle of the wood.
  4. Round the loop and back down to where you left the car.
