Sutri On the trail

An amphitheatre cut whole out of the tuff, and a mithraeum under a church

Sutri

Somebody carved a whole Roman amphitheatre out of the rock here, downwards, instead of building one up. It sits on a tufo spur beside the Via Cassia, with an Etruscan necropolis cut into the same cliff.

How the day goes

  1. In through the park gate, and down into the amphitheatre carved out of solid tufo.
  2. Along the cliff of rock-cut tombs, and the sunken roads worn metres deep beside them.
  3. Under the church at the end, into the mithraeum, in small groups at a time.

The mithraeum takes only a few people at once, so the last part of the visit depends on the queue in front of you.
