Anzio On the trail

Walking the sulphur springs reserve at Tor Caldara

Anzio

The ground here breathes sulphur. Yellow crusts sit on the rock above the sea, the air smells of struck matches, and an oak wood runs down to a stretch of shore nobody has built on.

How the day goes

  1. Pick up the Sentiero della Torre and drop through the oak wood.
  2. Reach the vents, where the sulphur stains the rock yellow.
  3. Out to the tower and the low cliffs, with the sea open in front of you.

The smell is strong and the vents are no place to linger with small children; the beaches of Anzio are just up the coast if you want plain sea.
