Pitigliano On the trail

A full-day loop around Pitigliano through the Etruscan sunken roads

Pitigliano

The Etruscans cut roads down into the tufa until the walls stood far above head height, and nobody is sure why. Walking one is walking a corridor with moss on the walls and a strip of sky overhead.

How the day goes

  1. Out of Pitigliano, which stands on its own tufa spur like a piece of wall.
  2. Down into the first via cava, where the light goes green and the walls close in.
  3. Across the valleys between them on medieval paths and past rock-cut tombs.
  4. Back up into the town at the end, seeing it from below the way it was meant to be seen.

A full day on foot with climbs in and out of the gorges, and the sunken roads hold water: boots, not trainers.
