Palestrina On the trail

The terraced sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia at Praeneste

Palestrina

The town is built on the sanctuary. Streets follow the Roman terraces, houses sit on the ramps, and the climb from the main square to the museum is a climb up the temple itself.

How the day goes

  1. Start in the square, which was the forum of Praeneste.
  2. Climb the terraces, where the shape of the sanctuary shows through the town.
  3. Palazzo Colonna Barberini crowns it, standing on the line of the old temple.
  4. Inside, the Nile mosaic: Egypt in flood, laid out in coloured stone.

It is uphill the whole way to the museum, which is the point of the place and also hard work on a hot afternoon.
