Filettino On the trail

Monte Viglio, the roof of the Cantari ridge

Filettino

Monte Viglio is the highest thing on the Cantari ridge, and the route runs along the rim of a glacial cirque with the drop on one side of your boots for most of the way.

How the day goes

  1. The path leaves from the Serra Sant'Antonio pass above Filettino.
  2. Along the rim the cirque falls away below and the ridge line runs on ahead.
  3. At the Gendarme you either put hands on the rock or take the path that skirts it.
  4. The summit sits at the eastern edge of the park, looking over into Abruzzo.

In winter the snow cornices turn this into mountaineering rather than walking, which is a different day and a different set of skills.
