Lanuvio With your hands

Shape and fire a piece of terracotta on a farm in the Castelli Romani

Lanuvio

Wet clay under your thumbs, and then the kiln. Whatever you shape on this family farm in the Alban hills goes home with you, fired.

How the day goes

  1. Out to the farm at Lanuvio, south of Rome, where the workshop sits among the fields.
  2. Clay in your hands: pinch, coil, smooth, until the thing holds its shape.
  3. Into the kiln, and the piece you made is yours to carry away.
  4. A fenced park with donkeys, goats and rabbits, so children have somewhere to be.

The farm grew up teaching school groups, so ask on the phone whether they will open a session to visitors rather than a class.
