Isola Bisentina

The island in the middle of Lake Bolsena is privately owned and was closed for decades, so the only way onto it is the boat with a walk already booked. Once you land, the mainland is a rim of hills all the way round.

How the day goes

  1. Cross from Capodimonte or Bolsena, watching the island grow in front of the boat.
  2. Ashore at the darsena, then the church of Santi Giacomo e Cristoforo.
  3. The Cappella del Crocefisso, the Chiesa della Rocchina and the Malta dei Papi, where prisoners were held.
  4. A loop through the woods and back down to the landing.

Trekking shoes are the rule and the stone steps are cut uneven; anyone turning up in sandals or heels is put back on the boat.
