Formia On the trail

The tomb said to be Cicero's, on the Appian Way at Formia

Formia

Cicero was caught on the road near here while being carried to his ship, and killed on the spot. The funerary tower beside the Appia has carried his name ever since, whether or not he is actually under it.

How the day goes

  1. The tower stands right by the old road, in the open, visible whenever you pass.
  2. On the dates it opens, you go inside to the burial chamber.
  3. The archaeological museum in Formia holds the material from this coast.

The inside opens only on set dates, so most people see it the way it was meant to be seen: from the road.
