Bassiano On the trail

Monte Semprevisa, the roof of the Lepini

Bassiano

The Lepini are limestone, so they hold no water and grow beech instead. Semprevisa is the highest of them, and from the top the plain, the Circeo headland and the islands offshore all sit out there together.

How the day goes

  1. Meet the guide low down and climb through the beech wood while it is still cool.
  2. Out onto the open karst: rock, grass, sinkholes and no shade.
  3. The summit, with the whole coast laid out to the west.
  4. Down the same line, and back on the road to Rome by evening.

This is a day on foot with real ascent; for the same mountains at a gentler angle, the walk up to ancient Norba gets a view for far less climbing.
