Poggio Bustone On the trail

Birdwatching hides on Lago Lungo

Poggio Bustone

Two lakes are all that is left of the water that once filled this basin, and the birds never stopped using them. A path leads from the visitor centre to hides on Lago Lungo, where you hear more than you see.

Before you go. The reserve says the lakeside path is closed after flooding, and the visitor centre opens by appointment only. Call first — turning up unannounced will not work.

How the day goes

  1. Start at the visitor centre, which opens by arrangement rather than by timetable.
  2. Out along the lake path to the hides, quietly.
  3. Sit and listen: winter and the migration months put the most on the water.

The lakeside path depends on the water level and is not always walkable, so fix the day with the reserve before driving up.
