Subiaco

The limestone of the Aniene valley is full of holes, and this one you move through on ropes: chambers, fixed lines, traverses where the floor drops away, and your head torch as the only thing reaching the walls.

How the day goes

  1. Meet at the outdoor centre in Subiaco, then drive out to the cave in your own car.
  2. Helmet, harness and head torch on, and a walk in to the entrance.
  3. Inside: chambers, fixed sections and rope traverses, taken one at a time.
  4. Back out into the daylight, blinking, and down into Subiaco.

Narrow, dark and worked on ropes — if enclosed spaces get to you, the guided caves at Pastena cross the same rock on a walkway.
