Fumone

Fumone is the hill every village in the Sacco valley can see, which is exactly why the popes used it as a prison. Celestine V, the pope who resigned the office, died in a cell here, and you are taken to it.

How the day goes

  1. In through the Roman gate, then the Neapolitan one, with the valley opening behind you.
  2. The Celestine sanctuary and the cell — a small room with a very long story.
  3. The noble floor: the hall of the ancestors, the emperors, the coats of arms, the archive.
  4. Out on the roof, where a hanging garden grows on top of the keep, and the sentry walk goes round.

Everything is seen with a guide and in order, so the visit moves at their pace rather than yours.
