Marmore Falls: the Roman-made waterfall

The falls are man-made. Roman engineers cut the channel to drain a marsh and the river has been going over the edge ever since — switched on and off now, because the same water runs a power station.

How the day goes

  1. Be at the belvedere for the release: a trickle turns into a full roar in moments.
  2. The marked paths climb the terraces between the lower and upper viewpoints.
  3. The closest balcony puts you in the spray, so expect to come out wet.
  4. The upper belvedere looks back down the whole drop with the valley behind it.

The water comes down on a schedule rather than all day, and the climb between the belvederes is a real one.
