This is the stretch pilgrims still walk on their way to Rome, and it goes down rather than up: into gorges where the stream makes the noise and the trees keep the sun off, which is why it works in August too.

How the day goes

  1. Set off from Capranica on the old road and drop into the shade of the gorge.
  2. Streams, small bridges and a waterfall, with archaeological remains turning up beside the path.
  3. Arrive in Sutri, a town the Romans cut out of the tufa, and stop there.

It is long and steady rather than steep; if you want a climb and a summit, the beech woods of Monte Cimino give you that instead.
