Subiaco

The Aniene runs cold and quick under Subiaco, in the gorge below the Benedictine monasteries. It is a small river, and that is why beginners learn on it: the water tells you straight away when you get the paddle wrong.

How the day goes

  1. Gear on at the riverbank, then the first strokes in the slow water near the shore.
  2. Learning to read the current, where it pushes and where an eddy lets you stop.
  3. Out into the moving water, working the paddle until the boat goes where you point it.
  4. Dry clothes, and Subiaco above you on the hill with the monasteries up the road.

You will end up in the water at some point and you should be able to swim; if you would rather look at the gorge than argue with it, the monasteries above make the quieter day.
