Bike & Bird: easy ride and birdwatching in the Lake Vico reserve

Lago di Vico

Lake Vico fills another crater, with Monte Venere sitting inside the ring and marsh along the far edge where the birds are. The ride round it stays flat, and it stops wherever there is something worth looking at.

How the day goes

  1. Bikes, helmets and binoculars handed over, then out into the reserve.
  2. Round the lake, mostly on tarmac with stretches of track where it makes sense.
  3. A stop at the hide over the marsh, glasses up, learning what you are looking at.
  4. Back to the start, with Caprarola and the Farnese palace up the hill.

It is a birdwatching morning that happens to be on wheels; if the riding is the point, the hill routes above Frascati go faster.
