Orvieto

A long private day north of Rome: train to the Tiber valley, then assisted bikes up to Civita di Bagnoregio, the village on a crumbling pinnacle you can only reach on foot across a bridge. Orvieto and a glass of wine come after.

How the day goes

  1. Train out of Rome and onto the bikes at the Alviano reserve.
  2. Up out of the valley to the footbridge, then across it into Civita on foot.
  3. On to Orvieto on its tufa cliff, with a tasting of the local white.
  4. Train home with the tufa country going dark out of the window.

It is the longest day they run, door to door: if you want to be back for lunch, this is the wrong one.
