Orvieto

Orvieto sits on a block of volcanic rock, and the rock is hollow: the town above is built over rooms and passages cut into it from below. A guide takes you down from the cathedral square, out of the daylight.

How the day goes

  1. Tickets and the meeting point are on the cathedral square, with departures through the day.
  2. Down the steps out of the light, into chambers cut into the rock under the town.
  3. One of the caves holds its cold all year, which on a hot afternoon is the whole point.
  4. Back up into the square afterwards, with the rest of Orvieto still to walk.

The guiding is in Italian, with German in summer and French, Spanish or Russian arranged ahead — ask them what runs on your date when you call to book.
