Ferentillo

Something in the ground under Santo Stefano dried the bodies buried there instead of letting them rot, and the nineteenth-century exhumations brought them up whole. They are still down there, and you go and look.

How the day goes

  1. Down into the crypt, where the bodies stand in cases along the walls.
  2. Skulls, bones, and what the exhumations turned up alongside them.
  3. Then San Pietro in Valle, the abbey church on the same circuit, down in the valley.

It is a room of dead bodies, plainly displayed and not dressed up — worth saying out loud before you bring children along.
