Veroli

Veroli

A day out in Veroli

A hill town of the Ernici, with a Cistercian abbey below and a library nobody expects.

Veroli is walled, steep and older than it looks — the cyclopean stonework at the base of the walls is pre-Roman. The chapter library still has its original walnut shelving and the books are where the eighteenth century left them.

Casamari, down in the valley, is the other great Cistercian abbey of Lazio after Fossanova, and the monks still live in it.
