Pitigliano
A town growing straight out of a tufa cliff, with roads cut down into the rock around it by people nobody can fully explain.
8 days outthe nearest is a 2 h 18 drive from Rome
Pitigliano is built on the edge of a spur, and from the road below the houses look like a continuation of the rock. The Medici aqueduct crosses the ravine on arches, the Orsini fortress holds the diocesan museum, and the fountain of the seven spouts is where the town has taken its water for centuries.
The vie cave are the reason to stay: Etruscan sunken roads cut down through the tufa, in places above head height, running between the towns of this valley. There is a walking ring that takes most of a day, and a co-operative winery inside the town for afterwards.
