Civita di Bagnoregio
A town on a pillar of tufa, reached by a footbridge, with the ground falling away around it.
5 things to bookthe nearest is a 1 h 46 drive from Rome
Civita is joined to the rest of the world by one long pedestrian bridge, and the valley on either side is calanchi — grey clay badlands that erode a little further every winter. The town has been shrinking for centuries and a handful of people still live in it.
The walk in is the thing, and the walk below it — down into the badlands, looking up — is the one most people do not know they can do.
Best fit for this section first, then whatever you can book today. Closest to Rome breaks a tie. Never by who pays us.
