Civita Castellana

Civita Castellana

A day out in Civita Castellana

A fortress on a tufa island, in a town that has made ceramics for two thousand years.

7 days outthe nearest is a 1 h 08 drive from Rome

Civita Castellana stands on a spur ringed by gorges, with a Sangallo fortress guarding the only way in and a cathedral porch signed by the Cosmati. Before Rome it was Falerii, the Faliscan capital, and the museum in the fort holds what came out of it.

The town still makes ceramics — it is one of the largest producers in Europe — and the workshops will put you at a wheel and let you take home what you make.
