Stalactites lit inside a show cave Under the ground

Under Orte: an Etruscan-Roman aqueduct, a medieval dovecote and a snow well

Orte

Orte is hollow underneath: an aqueduct the Etruscans cut and the Romans used, a dovecote carved in the rock, and a well where snow was stored.

How the day goes

  1. A direct train from Termini to Orte, then up into the old town on its tuff spur.
  2. Down with a guide into the aqueduct, walking the channel that fed the town.
  3. The rock-cut dovecote, and the well where packed snow kept food cold.
  4. On the right weekend of the month the nymphaeum opens too, so ask which one it is.

Departures are at set times and the tourist office holds the places, so ring them or call in at the desk in town.
